The Georgia travel insurance requirement is now a real border-entry rule for tourists, not a recommendation hidden in a visa checklist. Since January 1, 2026, tourists entering Georgia must hold valid health and accident insurance with an insured sum of at least GEL 30,000.
The policy has to cover your full stay, including both the day you enter and the day you leave. It may be presented electronically or on paper, and the document must be available in English or Georgian.
Georgia travel insurance requirement at a glance
Before departure, check the legal minimum first and then decide whether the policy is actually suitable for your trip.
The legal threshold is stated in Georgian lari.
Cancellation-only, baggage-only or rental-cover products are not substitutes.
Electronic and physical policy documents are permitted.
Cover must include both arrival and departure dates.

1. What the Georgia travel insurance requirement actually says
Georgia’s Law on Tourism requires tourists visiting the country to have mandatory health and accident insurance. The detailed ordinance implementing the rule took effect on January 1, 2026.
At the border, an authorized officer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Patrol Police Department may check whether an arriving tourist holds the required policy. Georgia’s immigration law also allows lack of health and accident insurance to be a ground for refusing entry. That does not mean every missing document automatically produces refusal, but arriving uninsured creates a real entry risk.

2. The legal minimum is GEL 30,000
The policy’s insured sum must be at least GEL 30,000. The rule is expressed in Georgian lari, so if your policy uses another currency, make sure the stated coverage is comfortably above the legal threshold and easy for a border officer to identify.
The policy must provide health and accident insurance in Georgia. A product focused only on trip cancellation, baggage, rental-car damage or similar travel inconveniences does not satisfy the stated insurance category.
Features such as evacuation, repatriation, baggage protection and cancellation cover may still be valuable, but they are not separate nationwide minimums listed in the current ordinance. For a broader buying framework, see Trailandra’s Digital Nomad Travel Insurance: What to Compare.
3. Who needs insurance to enter Georgia?
Tourists, including many visa-free visitors
The rule is framed around tourists entering Georgia, not only visa applicants. That matters because travelers from many countries may enter Georgia without applying for a visa in advance. Visa-free entry does not by itself remove the insurance obligation when the traveler is entering as a tourist.
Digital nomads and remote workers
The official material reviewed for this guide does not identify a special exemption for digital nomads. A remote worker entering as a visitor should therefore not assume that online work for a foreign employer removes the tourist-insurance requirement.
If your plans involve local employment or a longer immigration route, read Trailandra’s Georgia Remote Work and Visa Guide instead of relying on tourist-entry assumptions.
Express exemptions
The ordinance lists specific exemptions, including:
- holders of diplomatic or special visas;
- holders of diplomatic, official, service or special passports;
- accredited diplomatic, consular and certain international-organization personnel and their accredited family members;
- people whose entry is covered by applicable international treaties or agreements of Georgia; and
- drivers engaged in international road freight or passenger transport.
4. What the policy document must show
The legal requirement is not only about buying “some travel insurance.” The document itself needs to contain enough information to establish what was purchased.
| Check | What the Georgian rule requires | What to verify before boarding |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance type | Health and accident insurance | Make sure both risks are clearly covered by the policy/certificate. |
| Coverage limit | At least GEL 30,000 | Do not rely on a vague “worldwide” marketing label. |
| Territory | Covered territory must be stated | Georgia should be named or clearly included in the stated territory. |
| Dates | Entire stay | Arrival and departure dates must both fall inside the insured period. |
| Language | English or Georgian | Download the version you can actually present at the border. |
| Format | Electronic or paper | Save the PDF offline; paper is a useful backup, not an extra legal requirement. |
The ordinance also requires the policy to state the parties to the contract, covered territory, subject matter of insurance, coverage start and end dates or times, insured risks, the insurance sum or limits, and information about the insurance premium and payment.
5. Can SafetyWing be used for Georgia?
SafetyWing’s current public product pages describe Nomad Insurance Essential as travel medical insurance with a published overall limit of US$250,000, while Nomad Insurance Complete is broader international health insurance with a published overall limit of US$1.5 million.
Those headline limits are well above Georgia’s numerical GEL 30,000 threshold, but that alone does not prove legal compliance. Georgia’s rule also cares about the insurance category, covered territory, policy dates, insured risks, language and the information shown on the document you present.

If you are considering SafetyWing, review the current certificate and policy wording before purchase. 6. What Tbilisi Airport arrivals should expect
There is no separate Tbilisi Airport insurance regime. The same national requirement applies at Georgian border checkpoints, including Tbilisi International Airport.
Keep the policy with your passport and arrival documents. An electronic copy is legally permitted, but save the PDF to your phone rather than relying on email or mobile data. A paper backup can be useful if your battery fails or the phone is damaged.
Do not plan to buy insurance after landing. The official guidance reviewed for this article does not promise a grace period or a guaranteed airport desk where a missing policy can be fixed after arrival.
For another small piece of pre-flight risk reduction, Trailandra’s Travel eSIM Pre-Flight Setup Guide explains how to avoid landing without working data.
7. Georgia travel insurance requirement: pre-flight checklist
- Health and accident insurance: both are covered, not only travel inconvenience benefits.
- Minimum limit: the insured sum is at least GEL 30,000.
- Territory: Georgia is named or clearly included.
- Dates: the policy starts no later than arrival and stays active through departure.
- Language: the document you will present is in English or Georgian.
- Insurer: the policy is issued by a Georgian insurer or a foreign insurer authorized to provide the cover under the law applicable to that insurer.
- Offline access: a readable policy or certificate is downloaded to your phone.
Useful extras for longer or more active trips
These can be important even though the current ordinance does not list them as separate nationwide minimums:
- emergency outpatient and inpatient treatment limits;
- medical evacuation and repatriation;
- deductibles or excess;
- pre-existing-condition exclusions;
- skiing, trekking, climbing or motorcycling exclusions;
- claims and assistance contacts usable from Georgia; and
- whether the policy can be extended if travel dates change.
8. Long stays need an extra policy check
The ordinance defines the insured period as the period from entry into Georgia until departure and caps the relevant period at no more than one year. If you plan a long stay, check both the dates printed on the certificate and the policy’s maximum trip duration.
An annual multi-trip plan can still limit the duration of each individual journey. A policy that remains “active” for a year is not useful if the insured trip period ends before your planned departure from Georgia.
Common questions about Georgia travel insurance
Is travel insurance required for visa-free entry to Georgia?
Yes when you are entering as a tourist. Visa-free status does not by itself remove the mandatory health and accident insurance requirement.
Can I show the policy on my phone?
Yes. The Georgian rule permits electronic or physical policy documents. Save the file offline rather than relying only on email.
Does the policy need to be in Georgian?
No. It may be in Georgian or English.
Is GEL 30,000 the only thing I need to check?
No. The policy also needs to be health and accident insurance, cover the full stay, identify the covered territory and insured risks, and contain the other required policy information.
Can I buy insurance after I arrive at Tbilisi Airport?
Do not rely on that. The rule applies on entry and official guidance does not guarantee a post-arrival grace period or airport purchase solution.
Does Georgia specifically approve SafetyWing?
No official source reviewed for this article identifies SafetyWing, or any other foreign brand, as universally pre-approved. Check the actual certificate and policy against the Georgian requirements before travel.
Final check before flying to Georgia
A reliable Georgia travel insurance requirement check comes down to four things: Georgia is covered, health and accident insurance is stated, the insured sum is at least GEL 30,000, and your policy dates include the full stay. Save the document offline before you leave.
