SafetyWing Nomad Insurance is not a single type of cover. Its two current plans — Nomad Insurance Essential and Nomad Insurance Complete — solve different problems.
Essential is primarily travel medical insurance for new and unexpected illnesses or injuries while travelling. Complete is broader international health insurance with additional travel protections, including routine care, mental-health support, cancer treatment and maternity benefits within stated limits.
The question is therefore not simply whether SafetyWing is “good”. The useful question is which plan matches the healthcare risk you actually need to cover.
Essential is travel medical cover. Complete is broader health insurance.
Essential is the more practical choice for many healthy, mobile digital nomads who mainly want protection against unexpected medical problems abroad.
Complete costs substantially more but adds routine outpatient care, mental-health benefits, cancer treatment, selected preventive care and maternity benefits.
Neither plan should be assumed to cover every medical need. In particular, SafetyWing currently states that both Essential and Complete exclude pre-existing conditions.

What Nomad Insurance Essential actually covers
Essential is best understood as emergency-oriented travel medical insurance. It is designed around new and unexpected medical problems, not routine healthcare.
Eligible treatment can include hospital stays, physician and nursing care, surgery, diagnostics, ambulance services connected with hospitalisation and eligible prescription medication.
Essential currently has no overall deductible. That does not mean every medical expense is automatically reimbursed. Eligibility, exclusions, benefit limits, required documentation and reasonable-cost provisions still apply.
Emergency medical evacuation
Essential includes medically necessary evacuation to a better-equipped hospital when required under the policy. The currently displayed limit is US$100,000 over a lifetime.
Travel benefits are useful, but limited
Essential also contains selected travel benefits such as travel delay, lost checked luggage, trip interruption in specified circumstances, passport or wallet-related benefits and emergency evacuation from local unrest.
These benefits should not be confused with broad, cancel-for-any-reason style trip insurance. Exact triggers, documentation and limits matter.
The Essential exclusions that matter most
This is the section I would read before looking at the price. Essential is not intended to replace comprehensive everyday health insurance.
- Pre-existing illnesses or injuries are excluded.
- Routine check-ups and preventive healthcare are not the core purpose of the plan.
- Routine maternity and childbirth are not covered.
- Cancer treatment is excluded.
- Mental-health treatment is not included under Essential.
- High-risk and professional sports can be excluded or require an add-on.
- Claims connected to intoxication, unlawful activity or missing required safety equipment can create problems.
- Travel-disruption benefits have specific qualifying conditions.
What Nomad Insurance Complete adds
Complete is a substantially broader product. SafetyWing currently advertises a US$1.5 million overall annual medical limit together with routine and emergency healthcare.
It can include outpatient doctors and specialists, prescription treatment, selected screenings and vaccinations, mental-health sessions, cancer treatment, wellness therapies and maternity within defined limits.
Maternity and preventive care
Complete currently lists routine maternity care with a US$2,500 limit per pregnancy after a 10-month waiting period.
It also lists selected screenings and vaccines up to a stated annual limit. These additions make Complete materially different from Essential, but the limits still need to be compared with the real cost of care in the country where you expect to receive treatment.
Pre-existing conditions are still excluded
SafetyWing’s current FAQ describes a pre-existing condition broadly enough to include certain illnesses or injuries previously diagnosed, treated or symptomatic before coverage starts. Read the current policy wording for the definition that applies to your certificate.
Who is Essential better for?
Essential is most logically matched to someone who is relatively healthy, highly mobile and mainly concerned about a new accident or unexpected illness abroad.
- You move between countries frequently.
- You want emergency-oriented travel medical cover.
- You do not rely on the policy for routine or chronic healthcare.
- You value the ability to purchase cover while already travelling.
- You are comfortable with the US$250,000 overall limit.
- You understand that travel benefits are conditional and limited.
Who is Complete better for?
Complete is more relevant when you are effectively living abroad rather than simply travelling and you need broader day-to-day healthcare.
- You expect to remain abroad for an extended period.
- You need routine doctor or specialist visits.
- You want mental-health or cancer-treatment benefits.
- You may use selected screening or preventive-care benefits.
- You need stronger home-country continuity.
- You can justify the higher monthly premium.
- You are comfortable with a longer commitment and plan administration requirements.
Check the live price and policy before buying
Insurance prices and wording can change. Use the live quote, then open the current coverage document and confirm that the exclusions fit your medical and travel situation.
Before buying either plan
- Confirm your destination is eligible.
- Check whether US coverage or another regional add-on changes the price.
- Read the current definition of a pre-existing condition.
- Check activities and sports you expect to do.
- Review evacuation and repatriation limits.
- Check outpatient, maternity and mental-health sub-limits if relevant.
- Understand cancellation and commitment rules.
- Check which treatments need approval before receiving care.
- Download the actual certificate and policy wording after purchase.
Essential and Complete should not be judged as the same product
Nomad Insurance Essential makes the most sense for healthy, mobile travellers who primarily want protection against an unexpected medical event abroad and accept its important exclusions.
Nomad Insurance Complete is much closer to international health insurance. Its higher price buys broader everyday healthcare benefits, but limits, commitment terms and exclusions still matter.
Neither product is automatically right for every digital nomad. The deciding factor should be the healthcare you could realistically need, not the cheapest displayed monthly price.
