Hungary White Card: €3,000 Net Income, 2-Year Limit & Family Rules

Research re-checked September 11, 2026 against the current guidance of Hungary’s National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.

The Hungary White Card is easy to misunderstand if you look only at Budapest, the €3,000 income requirement and the phrase “digital nomad visa.”

On paper, it is one of Europe’s more straightforward remote-work residence permits.

You prove that your work is outside Hungary, show enough income, arrange somewhere to live and demonstrate that healthcare will be covered.

Then you can live in Hungary while continuing to work remotely.

But the permit becomes much less flexible once you look at what it does not allow.

You cannot use it to take ordinary Hungarian employment. You cannot hold a share in a Hungarian company. The permit is initially valid for no more than one year and can be extended only once. Family reunification is generally not available through the White Card route.

That makes it quite different from a residence programme designed for a family hoping to build a permanent life in the country.

The short version The Hungary White Card is aimed at qualifying third-country nationals who work remotely for an employer outside Hungary or remotely operate a profitable company outside Hungary in which they hold a share. You currently need at least €3,000 in legal net monthly income for the six months before entry and must maintain that level during your stay. The permit can last up to one year and may be extended once for another year.

Who actually qualifies for the Hungary White Card?

Hungary’s current official guidance defines the eligible work structures more narrowly than many generic digital-nomad guides do.

The White Card can be issued to a third-country national who fits one of two main situations.

Your situation What Hungary currently requires
Remote employee You have a verified employment relationship in a country outside Hungary and perform that work remotely from Hungary using digital technology.
Foreign company owner You own a share in a company outside Hungary that has verified profit and remotely perform work for, or manage, that company from Hungary.

The authorities can ask for evidence that the foreign employer or business is real and actually operating.

For employees, supporting material can include an employer statement describing the employer’s activity, your position and the fact that the work can be performed remotely.

For company owners, expect to prove the company’s genuine operation, your role, your ownership and its income or profit.

Freelancers should not assume eligibility from the word “digital nomad.” The current White Card factsheet expressly lists foreign employment and ownership of a profitable foreign company. It does not separately list an independent freelancer working only through individual client contracts as its own eligibility category. If that is your structure, confirm eligibility with Hungary’s immigration authority or the competent consulate before building a relocation plan around the White Card.

The €3,000 rule is about the previous six months

This is probably the most useful number to remember, but the number alone is not enough.

The current requirement is a legal monthly income of at least €3,000 net.

More importantly, Hungary expects you to have reached or exceeded that level for at least six months before entry.

You must also maintain the required income during your stay in Hungary.

That makes this different from a residence programme where one new high-paying contract may be enough to show a projected annual income.

For the White Card, your recent income history matters.

Evidence can include:

  • bank statements covering the previous six months;
  • an employer certificate showing regular income; or
  • a certificate from the relevant tax authority where appropriate.

I would make sure the income evidence and the work evidence tell the same story before submitting anything.

If your employer letter says you have worked there for a year but the bank records show irregular transfers from several unrelated sources, that does not automatically mean refusal — but it can create questions you could have dealt with before filing.

You cannot use the White Card to start working locally

This is not a general Hungarian work permit.

White Card applicants must not pursue gainful activity in Hungary and must not hold a share in a Hungarian company.

The rule continues after approval.

Hungary’s immigration authority specifically warns that it will withdraw the residence permit if the holder works for or on behalf of an employer in Hungary or acquires a share in a Hungarian company.

Think carefully before accepting local work.
If your plan is “move to Budapest on the White Card, then find a Hungarian job once I arrive,” this is the wrong permit to treat as a shortcut.

The White Card works best when your professional life can genuinely remain outside Hungary for the whole period you intend to use it.

Where do you apply?

The answer depends partly on whether your nationality allows visa-free entry into Hungary.

If you are not eligible for visa-free entry

If you do not already hold a residence permit and your entry into Hungary is not visa-exempt, the initial White Card application is generally submitted outside Hungary.

The application can be submitted through the Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission in your country of nationality or habitual residence.

You normally do not need to file a completely separate application for a visa just to collect the approved residence permit. The residence-permit application includes the application for the relevant entry visa.

If your nationality allows visa-free entry

A third-country national from a visa-exempt country who does not already hold a residence permit can currently submit the application while legally staying in Hungary.

Applications inside Hungary can be submitted:

  • online through Enter Hungary; or
  • in person at the competent regional directorate of the immigration authority.

Do not confuse visa-free entry with automatic White Card approval. Visa-free status only changes where you may be able to submit the residence application; you still have to satisfy the White Card requirements.

What does a White Card application cost?

The current Hungarian fee schedule applies different charges depending on how and where the residence-permit application is lodged.

Application route Current administrative fee
Application abroad including entry visa to collect the permit €110
Application submitted in Hungary in person HUF 39,000
Application submitted in Hungary through Enter Hungary HUF 26,000
Extension of a residence permit HUF 26,000

These are administrative fees, not the entire cost of moving.

You may still have costs for document translation, certification, accommodation, healthcare arrangements or other supporting material.

Check the current fee page again immediately before payment. Immigration fees are exactly the kind of detail that can change while an older blog post stays online for years.

What documents should you prepare?

A White Card application is less about collecting every document you own and more about proving several specific things clearly.

You need to establish:

  • your identity and valid travel document;
  • the qualifying foreign work or foreign business;
  • your ability to perform that activity remotely;
  • the required recent income;
  • your accommodation in Hungary;
  • healthcare coverage or financial capacity to meet healthcare costs;
  • your ability to leave Hungary when required; and
  • any other entry and residence conditions relevant to your case.

Your passport also matters to the final permit period. The immigration authority sets the expiry date so that your travel document remains valid for at least three months beyond the approved residence period.

You need a real accommodation plan

The White Card application requires evidence that you have somewhere suitable to stay in Hungary.

The current official list includes several ways to prove that right of accommodation, such as:

  • a residential lease;
  • proof that accommodation is being provided to you;
  • proof of property ownership; or
  • evidence of an accommodation reservation and payment.

The exact document you use should match the actual arrangement.

If you are choosing Budapest mainly because a monthly apartment looked cheap online, check the dates carefully. A price that works in one part of the year may not remain available when your lease ends.

Our seasonal housing guide for remote workers explains how to match a long stay with rental seasons, lease terms and immigration dates before committing.

Healthcare proof is required, but that does not mean “buy any nomad insurance”

Hungary requires evidence that you have access to comprehensive healthcare services or can cover the cost of those services.

The official guidance recognises several possible ways this condition may be met, including qualifying health coverage or evidence that you have sufficient resources to pay for healthcare.

That is why we have not automatically added a travel-insurance affiliate link to this guide.

A product that works well for travel does not automatically satisfy every residence-permit authority’s evidence requirements.

If you intend to use private insurance as part of the White Card application, check the actual certificate and coverage against the current Hungarian requirement before purchasing it specifically for immigration purposes.

Once you are living abroad, the immigration requirement is only one part of healthcare planning. Our guide to routine healthcare abroad for digital nomads covers finding clinics, direct payment and keeping medical records between countries.

The White Card can last two years — but not two years at once

The initial White Card can be issued for a maximum of one year.

It may then be extended once for another year.

That creates a maximum potential White Card period of around two years, assuming you continue to qualify and the extension is approved.

The extension is not something to leave until the last few days.

Current rules say an extension application:

  • must be submitted in Hungary through Enter Hungary;
  • can be filed no earlier than 90 days before expiry;
  • must be submitted no later than 30 days before expiry;
  • requires you to hold a valid residence permit when applying; and
  • requires qualifying physical residence in Hungary.

For the last point, the current factsheet says the applicant must have resided in Hungary with the permit for at least 90 days within any 180-day period before the extension application.

So this is not a residence card I would treat as a completely passive backup while spending almost the entire year somewhere else.

The family rule changes who this permit is good for

For a solo remote worker, the White Card can be fairly clean.

For a couple or family, it becomes more complicated.

Hungary’s current guidance states that family members of a White Card holder or applicant are generally not granted a residence permit for family reunification on that basis.

There is a narrow exception involving a child born in Hungary to a White Card holder during the validity of the permit.

For ordinary relocation planning, however, the important message is simple: do not assume your spouse and children can simply be added as dependants in the same way they can under some other European digital-nomad residence schemes.

It is also not designed as a permanent-residence route

The two-year maximum is only part of the story.

The current White Card factsheet specifically says that White Card holders may not be granted a Hungarian national residence card on the basis of that status.

It also contains unusually strict wording around changing to another residence purpose.

For that reason, I would not choose the White Card because you assume it will be easy to arrive as a digital nomad and then quietly convert into a completely different Hungarian residence route later.

If permanent settlement is your real objective, research the route that matches that goal from the beginning.

If you are comparing countries for a temporary remote-work base instead, Trailandra’s Digital Nomad Destinations hub is the better place to compare legal fit, housing and everyday practicality.

How long does the application take?

The current immigration factsheet gives a procedural administration period of 21 days.

It also states that the authority adopts a decision on the merits within 30 days from submission.

Those numbers should not be treated as a guaranteed travel countdown.

If the authority asks for missing documents or needs additional procedural steps, the time spent remedying those deficiencies does not count in the basic administration period.

If you submit online through Enter Hungary, there is another detail worth knowing: an application is treated as received only after the required fee has been paid and the required biometric and signature steps are completed within the specified period.

In other words, clicking “submit” is not always the same thing as having a complete application formally received.

What about tax?

A Hungarian residence permit and Hungarian tax residence are not the same question.

The White Card tells you why you may reside in Hungary. It does not by itself settle where your employment income, business income or other income is taxable.

Your result can depend on time spent in Hungary, tax residence elsewhere, the source and type of income, treaty rules and your business or employment structure.

Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Administration also has separate registration and reporting rules for foreign individuals who become subject to Hungarian taxation.

Do not choose the White Card based on a simple internet claim such as “foreign income is not taxed” or “183 days solves everything.” Immigration status and tax status should be checked separately for your own circumstances.

Who does the Hungary White Card make sense for?

I think the White Card works best for a fairly specific person.

You already have stable foreign income comfortably above €3,000 net.

Your work arrangement clearly fits the official foreign-employment or foreign-company structure.

You are happy to keep your professional activity outside Hungary.

You are moving alone, or your partner already has an independent legal basis to live in Hungary.

And you see Budapest or another Hungarian city as a one- or two-year base rather than the first step of a permanent immigration plan.

Under those circumstances, the restrictions are less of a problem.

But I would think twice if your income has only just crossed €3,000, if you rely on ad-hoc freelance clients and do not clearly fit the official work categories, if your spouse needs dependant status, or if your real plan is to find a Hungarian employer after arrival.

Those are not small technicalities. They go directly to whether this permit fits your life.

Trailandra Take

The Hungary White Card is appealing because the headline rules look clean: €3,000 net, remote work and up to two years in Hungary.

But the permit is actually strongest because it is narrow, not because it is flexible.

It works well for someone whose foreign job or foreign company is already established and who simply wants to move that existing working life to Budapest for a while.

It is much weaker as a family immigration route, a bridge into the Hungarian labour market or a path toward permanent residence.

Before applying, I would ask one question first: “If absolutely nothing about my job or family situation changes for the next two years, does this permit still work for me?”

If the answer is yes, Hungary deserves a serious look. If the plan only works because you expect to change jobs, bring dependants later or convert to another status, research that next step before moving.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Hungary White Card?

The Hungary White Card is a residence permit for qualifying third-country nationals who perform eligible foreign work remotely from Hungary using digital technology.

How much income do I need for a Hungary White Card?

The current minimum is €3,000 in legal net monthly income. The applicant must have met or exceeded that level for at least six months before entry and must maintain the required income during the stay.

Is €3,000 gross or net?

The current Hungarian immigration guidance states €3,000 net per month.

Can freelancers apply for the Hungary White Card?

Do not assume that every freelancer qualifies. The current official factsheet expressly describes applicants with verified foreign employment and applicants who own a share in a profitable foreign company. Independent freelancers whose structure does not fit either route should confirm eligibility directly with the Hungarian immigration authority or competent consulate.

Can I work for a Hungarian company?

No. The White Card is designed around foreign work. The immigration authority states that the permit will be withdrawn if the holder works for or on behalf of an employer in Hungary or acquires a share in a Hungarian company.

How long is the Hungary White Card valid?

The residence permit can be issued for a maximum of one year and may be extended once for another year.

Can I renew it more than once?

No. Current guidance states that the permit can only be extended once for the same purpose.

Can my spouse come as my dependant?

Family reunification is generally not available on the basis of a White Card. A spouse would normally need an independent legal basis for residence rather than simply being added as a White Card dependant.

Can I apply while already in Hungary?

If you are a national of a country whose citizens may enter Hungary visa-free and you do not already hold a residence permit, current rules allow an initial application during your legal stay in Hungary. It can be submitted through Enter Hungary or in person at the competent regional directorate.

What if I need a visa to enter Hungary?

If your entry is not visa-exempt and you do not already hold a residence permit, the initial application is generally submitted outside Hungary through the appropriate Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission.

How much is the application fee?

Under the current general residence-permit fee schedule, an application abroad that includes the entry visa to collect the permit costs €110. An application submitted in Hungary currently costs HUF 39,000 in person or HUF 26,000 through Enter Hungary. A residence-permit extension currently costs HUF 26,000.

How long does processing take?

The immigration authority lists a 21-day procedural administration period and states that a decision on the merits is made within 30 days from submission. Time used to obtain missing documents or complete additional procedures can extend the practical timeline.

Do I need health insurance?

You must demonstrate access to comprehensive healthcare services or the financial ability to cover those healthcare costs. Check the current evidence requirements before purchasing an insurance policy specifically for immigration purposes.

Can the White Card lead directly to permanent residence?

The White Card is not designed as a permanent-residence route. Current official guidance specifically states that White Card holders may not be granted a national residence card on the basis of this status.

What should I do when the White Card period ends?

Plan your next legal status or departure well before expiry rather than assuming that another Hungarian residence category can automatically be obtained from the White Card. If you are leaving Hungary, our digital nomad residence-permit exit guide covers permits, address records, housing, tax records and re-entry planning.
